Finding balance and beauty in my everyday life as a mom and a biotech professional.
Welcome, I am so glad you’re here!
Let’s do some introductions first. My name is Liliam and I am originally from Havana, Cuba. Almost everyone calls me Lily, except my abuela who used to call me Lulu. I am an islander at heart and I love the smell of the sea and the sound of the waves.
Currently live in Upstate NY in the US, very far from the sea and the warmth, with my Indian husband and my 2-year-old rambunctious daughter.
We are a multicultural family who loves to share food and recipes
When I first met my husband one of the first things he realized was how much I loved food. We are both very adventurous eaters and we love trying new things. One of our favorite activities as a family is sharing food and trying new recipes. Fun fact about us! We love cooking gadgets and you can find anything in our kitchen.
I am also a biotech geek and a bookworm
Growing up I was very curious about nature so when the time came, I decided to pursue a career in the field of biology.
I worked for more than 15 years as a researcher in multiple projects in biotech, genetic engineering, genetics, and molecular biology. But in 2020, I decided that lab life wasn’t for me anymore and traded my lab coat for a computer, patent applications, and market reports. I was still involved in science but from a different angle.
And then I became a mom and everything changed forever…
In 2021 I became a mom and the world as I knew it completely changed. I had to juggle an already busy life with diaper changes, baby bottles, liters of coffee, cute baby outfits, and no clue of what to do with the tiny human I was supposed to keep alive and thriving.
I had to learn how to combine motherhood with my job and my career.
Before my daughter, I had my whole life planned out. I had a schedule and I stayed on top of things. I worked on multiple projects and still managed to get time to myself to do things I enjoyed. But motherhood came with a whole new set of challenges and almost 90% of them were totally out of my control. I was constantly troubleshooting and half of the time with no success.
I already know how to prioritize and stay organized, is it so different with kids in the picture?
The answer is YES with capital letters. The biggest challenge for me was to understand that most of the things were out of my control so I had to re-train myself. My priorities list changed dramatically. On top of that, me and my husband are both immigrants and that means no support system from family. So we both had to find new ways to nourish and nurture our relationship, our careers, and our daughter.
